THURSDAY
ITINERARY
Join us for an enchanting day tour of the fascinating Sombrero Chino, as it’s called in Spanish. This
inactive volcano islet, located near Santiago Island, has a peculiar shape that resembles a traditional
Chinese hat. That’s why its name.
Upon disembarking on its pristine white sand beach, after two hours of sailing from the Itabaca
Channel, you'll be stepping into a world of dramatic contrasts. We'll explore rugged lava formations,
creating an otherworldly backdrop for our adventure. The landscape here is not just unique; it's
breathtakingly beautiful, with a mix of rough lava flows and soft, inviting sands.
Get ready to encounter the playful Galapagos sea lions, who often grace the beaches of Chinese Hat.
These friendly creatures highlight the island, offering up-close encounters in their natural habitat. And
keep your eyes peeled for the marine iguanas basking in the sun – these prehistoric-looking creatures
are a sight to behold.
Sometimes, if we're lucky, we might spot the majestic Galapagos hawk soaring overhead, a true
symbol of the wild spirit of the Galapagos. The surrounding waters are also home to fascinating marine
life, including a variety of fish, sharks, and occasionally rays and penguins.
Our journey then takes us on a Zodiac ride along the coast of nearby Santiago Island. Here, we have
the chance to witness a few penguins, and with some luck, we might even see them darting playfully
in the water.
The snorkeling experience near Santiago's coast is an underwater spectacle not to be missed. Immerse
yourself in the clear waters to discover an array of colorful fish, sharks, and, occasionally, rays and
penguins swimming alongside you.
Our itinerary begins with a Zodiac tour and a guided walk on the island, culminating in an exhilarating
snorkeling experience.
We gathered for our adventure at 7:00 AM at the entrance of the church, and our journey both began
and ended at the Itabaca Channel. After a day filled with discovery and awe, we expect to return
around 5:00 PM.

Today we will join the tour group at the indicated meeting point and time. Then, we will depart by bus
to the Itabaca Channel, where we will board the Galaxy Daily, thus beginning our adventure to North
Seymour Island.
This island is located north of Santa Cruz Island. It is known for its large colonies of blue-footed boobies
and frigate birds, known as the Galapagos pirates.
After arriving in North Seymour, we will have a dry landing and immediately start hiking on a 2.5 km
(1.55 miles) trail. We can go clockwise along the coast or head inland first to visit the colony of boobies.
During this tour, we will access the nesting sites of the largest breeding colonies on the islands. We
will then understand why Seymour is known for its rich wildlife.
Get ready to spot land iguanas and marine iguanas; also, a colony of sea lions, lava lizards, and
pelicans!
While we advance along the path, we will observe several trees where the male and female frigates
nest. As we continue through the trail, the terrain will become rocky. Then, we will have the
opportunity to appreciate the nesting place of the spectacular blue-footed boobies. This species is
fascinating for its courtship dance in which they can dance for hours until finally captivating the female
attention to nesting together.
Did you know that these boobies never build a nest? That is because a ring of white guano marks their
nesting area.
If you like plants, we will see some endemic flora species in North Seymour during the walk, such as
Opuntia, Croton, Castela, and Sesuvium cacti.
Bachas Beach
After we visit North Seymour and have a delicious lunch aboard, we will go to the beach known as
Bachas, located north of Santa Cruz Island. Here we can snorkel or take a relaxing walk on the beach.

wildlife watching. The saltwater lagoon behind the beach often has great blue herons and small birds.
Both the large and small beaches are nesting areas for green sea turtles.
